The project entailed the enlargement of the existing Farnworth Tunnels, a critical step to facilitate the passage of contemporary electric trains, thereby enhancing both capacity and reliability on this vital route.

J. Murphy & Sons Ltd, serving as the main contractor, executed the complex engineering tasks required for the tunnel's expansion and reinforcement. The project was recognised for its environmental considerations, earning the Environmental Initiative of the Year Award at the 2015 International Tunnelling Awards. Additionally, it received accolades such as the Most Interesting Infrastructure Project Award in 2015 by Rail Engineers and was Highly Commended for Best Infrastructure Project at the RICS Awards NW in 2016.
