The Battersea Crossover Box, which will serve the extended London Underground Northern Line at the new Battersea Station, comprises a 25 m x 60 m x 16m deep excavation adjacent to the historic Battersea Power Station. In order to facilitate its construction, three levels of temporary propping were required, one of which included twin steel waling beams around three sides of the excavation. Prior to construction, the propping systems required Category 3 verification; OTB carried out full structural analysis on each level of propping and verified the designs to ensure compliance with Eurocode standards.

Global analysis was undertaken using Robot structural analysis software to ensure interaction between the twin beam walers, the props and the box diaphragm walls was fully accounted for. OTB also verified the design for a contingency propping solution which could be used to replace the lowest level of propping should observed wall movements be lower than anticipated.

Due to the width of the crossover box, full span props could not be delivered to site in an efficient manner. Hence, OTB designed splices which would allow the props to be delivered in two or three pieces, depending on the Contractors preference. This allowed for efficient and flexible construction.

OTB provided the permanent and temporary works design and construction supervision to FLO JV for the;

  • Two SCL running tunnels and shafts,
  • Three running tunnel SGI cross passages including SGI opening sets,
  • Two step plate junctions connecting the SCL running tunnels into the existing Kennington Loop tunnels,
  • Four SGI cross passages at Kennington Station,
  • SCL Launch Tunnels for the TBMs,
  • SCL overrun tunnels.


The original design of the step plate junctions was optimised in a number of ways to improve construction, safety, cost and programme. A novel use of SCL tunnelling, along and over the top of the operational running tunnel was developed to reduce the amount of manual excavation. Exposing the whole running tunnel linings required the careful monitoring of the tracks and tunnels to ensure the safe operations of the trains during the works.


The Kennington Station cross passages, different connections had to be designed and constructed due to the different lining types in the existing platform tunnels, existing circular cast-iron segmental tunnel linings and horseshoe shaped masonry linings. The cross passages were built from the existing platforms with the sequence designed to remove the existing lining and install the permanent support whilst minimising the deflection and stresses in the asset to ensure the serviceability of the existing tunnel lining in the long-term once the cross passages were finished.
